There are precious few things humans love more than to gather. Some prefer a more religious context, some more bacchanalian. Some seek connections, while others come for the food, the highs, and sometimes, also the lows. Gatherings satisfy desires and we all want our desires to be fulfilled.

Featured in this edition is a tribute to one of the biggest religious festivals in Indonesia, one that revolves around Gatherings, especially in a familial context. We are proud to host a rare submission by Moustapha Spliff, itinerant DJ and selector who specializes in psychedelic mixes and is also an occasional partner-in-crime of Jakarta’s Ffonz although, mysteriously, both are never seen in the same room. It is a reminder that spirituality is universal and takes on many different forms and we hope that it can fill the gap for those of you who are not able to gather and celebrate with your loved ones this year.

Still in the context of Gathering is the first contribution by Toshiki Shimada, Japanese DJ and long-time Soydivision friend. Here he reflects on the current situation in Berlin, a city that absolutely thrives on Gatherings and the challenges that await this city we all love to hate and hate to love. He will be guesting on another Gathering of ours, our next streamed Soy&Synth, on the 30th May.

To round things up is another interview by Morgan Sully with Nindya Nareswari, our resident light artist and designer whose work revolves around the evocation of emotions through light, especially in the context of Gatherings.

Until we meet again.

Music hasn't managed to loosen its grip on Berlin-based selector Jan K since he listened to the likes of Mozart. and the Beatles on his Father’s stereo as a young child. Having gone on phases of listening to classical, rock, pop, punk, jazz, hip-hop and electronic music, he decided some years ago to share with people his own personal musical narrative. While his literary output has slowed down for the moment, he is increasingly sharing his music through mixes and performances, more recently with the Berlin collective l-kw. He is currently working a music project loosely based on his experience as a doctor. https://www.mixcloud.com/jan_k/
