On 17 March 2022 the casts and crew of Aryati sat down together with Azhari from Soy&Zine to discuss the whole process of making Aryati. From the birth of the idea, turning it into script, composing the music, to the execution of the theatre piece.
Aryati is a contemporary theatre piece that juxtaposes the life of Aryati, a woman from the village of Tugu, and the development of Keroncong music against the backdrop of Indonesian history. The work depicts the decolonization process of keroncong music from 1920 to 1990, from a colonial product to a claimed indigenous cultural heritage. The piece was initiated by the artist collective Soydivision.
